West Coast Hawks champ Kirk Montgomerie played his 250th game against Western Districts last Saturday, joining his brother Tyson who reached the milestone earlier this season. A big congratulations from everyone in Mid West on this outstanding achievement.
Kirk has an enviable record with seven A Grade Premierships (2003, 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014) right at the top of the list, maybe an eighth this year? Grand Finals just about every year that he has played, only missing 2004! Represented Mid West five times at Mortlock Shield plus Port Adelaide Cup and Kinlough Cup, 82 goals, 3 x Club Best Team Man, an award that he will always be in consideration for, committee member, League delegate, the list goes on.
The four Montgomerie brothers have all made a huge impact in Mid West.
Kirk is well known for taking on the big assignments in the big games, the opposition's best and most dangerous player is often tasked to Kirk, who never lets his side down. His love of the game is clear, once that white line is crossed he bleeds blue and gold! Always available to lend courteous advice to umpires and opposition, never far away when a team mate is in trouble! Recent years has seen a move predominantly to defence, which he has mastered in his usual way, but still dangerous when he sorties forward from time to time. Excellent skills, rarely misses his target, and prepared to run hard as a key member of the great West Coast Hawks sides.
Over his career he has played through injury,(shoulders, hamstring, knee, etc) as all the Montgomerie boys do, however maybe has received less sympathy than others when the source of these have been on the dance floor or social scene! Always front and centre at wind ups, footy trips, after match functions.
Nobody prepares better or reaches the excitement levels of Kirk, maybe the birth of his son would be up there with Grand Final success, so it will be interesting to see if he can keep up these life milestones with the same regularity, potentially he will have ten or more youngsters! Look out Tahla!
Congratulations Ronnie!
