A grade Women Update

On Thursday 20th October the A grade competition had a close round with the derby between Falcons Black and Falcons Yellow resulting in a draw, along with a 2 point loss to Spartans at the hands of the Devils.

Falcons Yellow are a young up and coming side, supported by the experienced Bettina Jackson. Playing without Bettina, Falcons Yellow were well led by Tylah Jackson with 14 points. Falcons Black have a more experienced side, and were well supported with the return of Peyton Fuller. The game was close throughout with Falcons Black gaining a break only to be countered each time. With time winding down the 1 point difference looked to be the difference before a defensive rebound by Tylah and a coast to coast drive before being fouled. Her one made foul shot sealed the draw. Lookout for their next game!

In the second game, the Devils outfit paced by players from Whyalla came out with a 2 point win over the seasoned Spartans team. Spartans boast the Harrison sisters, Grantham sisters and the return of club stalwart Brooke Grantham. Aysha Zada was explosive and Mia Grantham top scored on the night to keep this contest close.   A late 3point shot by Mia and a Devils turnover kept this game close. Wanita Calyun will return to the Devils outfit for the next game, but Spartans will learn from this game and adapt to maintain their competitiveness.

The A grade women’s competition will be a very close contest and is too early to call a premiership favourite.

A Grade Men’s Update

The A grade men’s competition shifted to Friday 21st October for one round proving popular for spectators. The Eagles verse South game was by the far the best game of A grade basketball this season, with Souths taking the win by 10 points. Lachlan Knibbs for Eagles continued his excellent form with 10 points in the first half, but after half time Adam Bentley curtailed his influence, along with effective help defence from Brett McKerlie. Souths pulled away in the second half to maintain a 10 point buffer. Tye Harrison and Slade Laube were effective at both ends of the court. Top scorers were Brett McKerlie/Slade Laube with 13 for Souths and Lachlan Knibbs with 14.

The Cobras verse Titans game was close through the first half, but resulted in a 16 point win to Cobras, their first for the season. Billy-Jo Martin had a break out game for his new club with 16 points and was effectively backed up by the return of Alan Margiatich. Travis Rabig and Jesse Smith willed their side to compete, but the experienced Cobras side had too many answers at both ends of the court. Top scorers were Brett Humphrys with 17 points and Travis Rabig and Jesse Smith scoring 8 apiece.

At the completion of round one Souths and Eagles look the early favourites in the A grade men’s, however Cobras will be around the mark come finals, as will Titans with their full squad.
