Caren Friend Receives Appointment to the New South Wales Touch Association Referee Coaching Panel

Congratulations to our very own Caren Friend who recently received appointment to the New South Wales Touch Association Referee Coaching Panel.

A position on the NSWTA Coaching Panel is one of the highest honours that can be afforded a referee and the appointment is thoroughly deserved. It is an official acknowledgement of the commitment to the sport, the expertise as a coach and ability as a mentor. The NSWTA Referee Coaching Panel is the top referee coaching body in the world with elevations to the panel being extremely rare. Only two appointments have been awarded in the last 8 years. This is an outstanding achievement as Caren is the first referee from Manly Warringah Touch Association ever to be given this distinction.

The NSW Referee Coaching Panel is the body which oversees all aspects of referee development, coaching, mentoring and training in NSW. Referee coaches are often seen at representative games speaking with the referees at half time then again at full time. They provide immediate feedback to the referees on various aspects of their performance and give direction for improvement. Referees are assessed on communication, positioning, signals, rulings, game awareness, game management and refereeing systems. The referee coaches are responsible for assessments for upgrades of referees which are recommended to the Director of Referees. At representative tournaments the coaching panel rank all the referees that participate and this then determines who is appointed to Semi Finals & Grand Finals. Grand Finals are ranked and the best performing referees receive the highest level games. The coaching panel also looks at trends of the game and ensures that referee coaching is in line with these developments.

From everybody at your Manly family, congratulations Caren!
