University hang on to beat Petone in Wellington club rugby league
The halfback stayed ice cool, to kick the goal from 30 metres out after Panthers prop Sione Likio have given away an obstruction penalty.
The heavy conditions at Kelburn Park created a number of turnovers, as University built an 18-6 lead by halftime. The game ebbed and flowed from there until a Likio try levelled things up at 22-22 with five minutes to play.
From there it was up to Tamaiva to step up and seal victory for University.
Loose forward Rob Carr, prop Conrad Collins and centre Te Miri Rangi were the standouts for the Hunters, while the best performances from the Panthers were supplied by second-rower Matt Wanoa, Likio and interchange forward Dominic Taloina.
Elsewhere, Whiti Te Ra maintained their unbeaten record by beating St George 44-10 at the Otaki Domain. After torrential rain delayed the start of the game, Whiti Te Ra quickly ran in four tries and by halftime they led 34-0.
Randwick beat Wainuiomata 26-18 at Naenae Park, having been up 14-0 at halftime. The Lions had went into the last quarter trailing 20-12, but couldn't continue their comeback.
Randwick prop Chance Tauri and Wainuiomata second row Dominic Bartels both had industrious games.
In the cellar dwellers' clash between the Upper Hutt and Porirua, it was the visiting Vikings who prevailed 32-18 at Whakatiki Street. Te Aroha had the bye.
