At Olds Park, the clash between 5th place St George and 6th place Easts was a tremendous one not belying their status on the ladder. St George got out of the blocks early, scoring towards the favoured clubhouse end to lead 2.0.12 to 1.2.8 at quarter time. Both teams competed vigorously for the ball with tremendous tackles and bumps from both sides pleasing the large crowd (100+) who were assembling for the Sydney AFL men's game of St. George vs Balmain. By three quarter time the score had reached St George 4.3.27 to Easts 1.7.13.
Those on the home side who were expecting a home team victory were to be surprised by the 4th quarter. Easts charged out of the blocks early to kick two quick goals causing tension to rise amongst both teams and the crowd. The momentum had swung Easts way and St George looked a bit lost in how to stopping it. The third and final goal caused much glee amongst the Easts team and when the siren sounded five minutes later, the Easts club song which had not been sung in SWAFL victory for a long long time was loudly and proudly sung by the Stingrays.
They had been the team that was more committed to the ball and for each other and full congratulations has to be awarded to Geoff Odgers and his team for continually playing footy regardless of previous results. For St George, the loss hurt but has galvanised the ladies for the rest of the 2008 SWAFL season.
Final Score Easts 4.10.34 St George 4.3.27
At Mahoney (I'm sure someone will give the author better commentary but until then....)
Second placed Balmain were too good for Fourth placed Sydney University 7.8.50 to 0.1.1
Third placed Newtown were competitive with league leaders Wests for most of the match but Wests pulled away to win 81 to 39.
