FEMALE FOOTBALL: FYI ….WHAT HAPPENED IN JULY
1. Strategy
and Planning
· Review of female Football in Victoria – Final report has been presented to AFL
Victoria Executive and will be presented to their Board for their ratification.
AFL will then assist AFL Victoria where required to roll out the recommendations
which will ensure integration and streamlining of resources.
· How to set up a Youth Girls competition
resource – currently with
Slattery Media who are formatting into hard copies ready for distribution. When
ready the resource will also be loaded onto the Community Portal for online
use. Timeline is end of August.
2. Female
Football Participation Pathway
Youth Girls
· NT– Welcome to Breeanna Brock AFLNT’s new female football coordinator. Bree
started late June but has already set up an U15s competition in Darwin. Her
next step is to engage school Ambassadors particularly the female teachers and
then start a Rec Footy program to attract more women to the game. Fabulous
strategic ideas so early in Bree’s football tenure!
· WA – 11 District teams have nominated for August’s carnival up from 8
Districts in 2009. Two country Districts have nominated with Great Southern
making the 5 hour bus trip to Perth for the first time.
Women’s League –
· ACT - held a
Women’s Tri team Challenge between them, NSW and ADF. Sponsored by NAB and
hosted by ACT Canberra the event was an
opportunity to continue the interstate rivalry that has built between NSW and
ACT as well as provide the ADF with some new challenges and keep them involved
in the game at a higher level.

a weekly one page spread in the senior community Record which kicked off with a
four page special in celebration.
· Tasmania – just concluded their second grand final in their
women’s league of 7 teams up from 3 teams in 2009.
· VWFL – received funding to assist in conducting a program to enhance club
governance. Identified as a crucial area that clubs require development in, the
League are to be congratulated on their initiative.
3. Marketing
and Promotion
· AFL U18 Youth Girls National Championships – to help raise the awareness of this historic
event follow the flight of the pink footballs as they make their journey to the
MCG for the first ever Welcome Ceremony at this level of representative
football. Watch out for Queensland’s creative ideas. Go to AFL KicksforChicks on Facebook and Twitter.

4. Integration and Inclusion
· WA – Further to the Women on Boards Forum in February, HR Manager, Patrick De
Haan has acquired funding (which has been topped up by the West Coast Eagles) for
40 women to attend 2 sessions of Assertiveness Training. Those who have
responded include AFL clubs, WAFL clubs, WAFC and key volunteers.
· International Cup – in 2011 there will be a Women’s Division of
this Cup for the first time. Initially targeting USA, Canada and PNG hoping to
drum up interest in other countries to have a bonafide competition.
5. Talent Player Pathway
· 16s Schoolgirls – Victoria and Western Australia played 3 games
against each other and 2 others against the South West Academy and a
Schoolgirls All Stars team. With good planning it is hoped to have the first
official Championships in 2011 because we will have at least 4 teams competing.
· AFL U18 Youth Girls National Championships – Victoria will now field 2 teams to make it a
6 team competition. Commencing with a Welcome Ceremony on September 6 at the
MCG, games will be played at Sandringham and Craigieburn concluding on the 11th.
All field umpires and one of the goal umpires come from the competing states
and AFL Victoria’s female Umpire Academy.
