FRATERNITY CUP PREMIER LEAGUE ROUND 2 WRAP

The second round of the Fraternity Club Preseason Cup Premier League Conference kicked off at Macedonia Park with Wollongong United facing arch-rivals Cringila Lions. Both sides came into the Group B encounter on the back of first up wins.

United controlled possession for most of the opening half and they opened the scoring in the 24th minute through captain Sam Munro who made a decisive run through the heart of the Lions' defence before tapping home.

Cringila looked more threatening in the second period thought their attacking raids ultimately came to nothing. Wollongong United put the game to bed with only a couple of minutes remaining through Matthew McNab who drove the ball into the bottom left corner from the edge of the area. The goal was McNab's third for the tournament and it sees United top Group B heading into the final round.

On Friday night the action continued in Group C with the Albion Park White Eagles hosting Bulli. The home side came into the match on the back of a defeat to Olympic while Bulli had a shock draw with local rivals Woonona.

Bulli took just six minutes to find the back of the net - a smart passing exchange leading to Marcus Beattie running through on goal and knocking the ball past Cristofer Ramirez. The score didn't change for the remainder of the half but Bulli doubled their lead in the 41st minute courtesy of a 30-metre wonder strike from Tobin Zoomers which homed into the top right corner.

Bulli switched off after taking the two-goal advantage and the White Eagles capitalised through Shayne Ardle who tucked away a pinpoint cross. The game began to deteriorate but with five minutes remaining, Bulli sealed the three points with Ben McDonald converting from the penalty spot.

The second match in Group B between Corrimal and South Coast United was the midday kick off on Sunday at JJ Kelly Park. Corrimal lost 2-1 to Cringila in the opening round while United suffered a similar fate against Wollongong United, going down 2-0.

Corrimal's Japanese duo Masahiko Morita and Takeru Okada put on a show, scoring all four of their side's goals. Morita netted a hattrick in the dreary conditions while United couldn't get on the scoresheet.

The 4-0 win moves Corrimal into second position in Group B with a do or die clash against Wollongong United in the final round.

The last match at JJ Kelly Park saw Wollongong United play the Woonona Sharks. Olympic had a stirring 3-1 win over the White Eagles in their opening match and knew a win would go a long way in securing progression from Group A.

Olympic would run out 2-0 winners with their goals coming either side of half time. The first came from a poor clearance that fell to ex Bulli midfielder Robbie Gaudiosi who placed the ball just inside the left post from 18 yards. The second was scored by captain Brendan Fordham.

Olympic lead Group A with six points, two ahead of Bulli. The two sides meet in the final round with the winner set to go through to the semis.

The two matches in Group C were contested at Tarrawanna Oval on Sunday. The midday kick-off pitted Port Kembla up against Picton. The 2017 Grand Final Champions earned a 2-0 lead going into halftime with Sandy Lowcock scoring his third and fourth goal of the tournament. Picton couldn't mount a comeback and the match finished 2-0.

Tarrawanna played Fernhill in the final match at Tarrawanna Oval and confidence at the Blueys was high after a strong first-up win. This was evident with Tarrawanna storming to a 5-0 lead at the break which included a 15 minute Bradley Acev hattrick.

Fernhill managed to stem the flow of goals in the second half but they couldn't trouble the scorers, the score finishing 5-0. The Foxes have conceded 10 goals in their opening two matches but strangely enough, they haven't conceded in two of the four halves played.

Tarrawanna and Port Kembla both have six points in Group C but the Blueys lead on goal difference. They face off in the final round, the winner will go through to the semi-finals though the loser has a strong chance of progressing as the best second-placed team.
