BERT BAMPTON CUP QUARTER FINAL REVIEW AND SEMI FINAL DRAW

 

 

The Fraternity Club Bert Bampton Cup quarter finals were contested this week with two District League clubs still with a chance of progressing to the final four. The draw for the semi finals in was conducted on Thursday afternoon with games set to be played in two weeks time.

 

Picton Rangers vs Oak Flats Falcons - Tuesday night at Hume Oval

 

Premier League strugglers Picton hosted Oak Flats who are currently 6th in the District League. Chris Murdzevski put the Falcons ahead from the penalty spot early in the match and they went on to restrict Picton’s attacking chances and secure a 1-0 win. The District League side has now kept six clean sheets in their past seven matches in all competitions and it sees them into the semi finals for the first time in their history.

 

Wollongong United vs Kemblawarra Fury - Tuesday night at Macedonia Park

 

Wollongong United made light work of Kemblawarra Fury who was still able to put out a star-studded lineup despite the absence of likes of Anthony Proia and Shane Murray. United ran out to a 5-0 half time lead with Taka Noji and Ricky Zucco bagging a brace each with the second goal from Zucco being a delightful dink from just inside the box. Fury pulled two goals back including one in the final seconds of the game to add some respectability to the scoreline. Wollongong United have taken out the Cup in two of the past three season and now they are one win away from competing in their fourth Grand Final in succession.

 

Bulli vs University - Wednesday night at Balls Paddock

 

It had been ten years since University made their last quarter final appearance in the Cup which was a 4-1 defeat to Bellambi. This time around the Students made the daunting trip to Premier League leaders, Bulli. The ‘I took the lead midway through the first half but a stunning volley from Craig Hood helped Uni manage a 2-1 lead early in the second half. Bulli finally asserted themselves through a wicked 30 yard half volley from Tobin Zoomers, who was making his long-awaited return to first grade. Guy Knight came off the bench to set Kyle Jackson up for two goals in three minutes with the match finishing 4-2. The last time Bulli made the final four of the Bert Bampton was 2010.

 

Wollongong Olympic vs Albion Park White Eagles - Wednesday night JJ Kelly Park

 

JJ Kelly Park hosted the match between the current Cup holders, Wollongong Olympic and the Albion Park White Eagles in a replay of last season’s semi final. The sides could not be separated after 90 minutes, although Olympic held a 2-1 lead with only two minutes on the clock. The White Eagles managed two extra times goals to settle the tie at 4-2 and progress to the semi final.
