SEASON PREVIEW: HELENSBURGH THISTLE

Helensburgh Thistle showed great promise last year starting well before the wheels literally fell off and the club failed to make the playoffs for the first time in several seasons.

The Thistle have lost Andrew Keep, Andrew Paine and Damien Warwick all to Fernhill whilst several others have also left the club through retirement, work or travel commitments.

The club this year has attracted former State and Premier League striker - Brad Boardman as player /coach but at 35 years old, Brad will be perhaps leaving it to young guns Luke Van Zyl and Reggae Rowley to get amongst the goals whilst Matt Wardle is sure to provide some stability between the sticks.

Helensburgh started their preseason with a win against Bellambi and two narrow losses against Oak Flats Falcons and Coniston FC. It looks like the Burgh will be competitive again this year although this is something we have come to expect over the last few years.

Helensburgh looks to be a much more difficult opponent to break down however I can’t see them seriously challenging for the title this year and perhaps making the playoffs is a more realistic challenge.
