WOMEN'S DIVISION 1 - ROUND 15 PREVIEW

Round 15 Preview

As we look ahead at Round 15, the Builders Club Women’s Division One League competition is as tight as a guitar string with the top three teams now only separated by one point albeit Albion Park a game in hand. The battle for fourth is a three-way battle with teams separated by just four points.

Matches scheduled this weekend: Sunday 10 July

Woonona v Helensburgh @ Ocean Park – 1.00pm

These two sides did not play as week due to their opponents having State Cup commitments so they would be hoping for an improvement in the weather so they can get on the park this week.

Woonona trial Albion Park by a solitary point and know that they will need to capitalise on any slip up by the leader. This week, Woonona host a youthful Helensburgh side who it’s fair to say have struggled to cope with the quality of Division One.

Since gaining promotion, Helensburgh have only been able to muster up a single point. The last time these two sides met, Woonona comprehensively won 6-0 and I can’t see things improving for Helensburgh in this game.

Albion Park v Balgownie @ Terry Reserve – 1.00pm

With Albion Park winning through to the State Cup Final ironically playing Wollongong Olympic, they would be feeling pretty good about themselves especially given they lead the competition by one with a game in hand. Anything can happen in the closing rounds and they will know that any slip up cause be throwing the championship away.

Balgownie have battled hard all year however they are expected to be no match for Albion Park this week. Last time round, Park won 7-0.

Thirroul v Tarrawanna @ Thomas Gibson Park – 1.00pm

Tarrawanna have snuck up into second place following their 6-1 thumping of Port Kembla last week albeit the Blueys have played an extra game. They have the points on the board and this is sure to create some pressure on the other two teams at the top of the table.

Thirroul themselves had a comfortable time of it beating Balgownie 7-0 last week but I am sure they will find Tarrawanna a far different proposition.

Tarrawanna will consider this a banana skin game as they only managed to beat Thirroul 2-0 last time they met. It may well be another close game especially in wet and slippery conditions.

Wollongong Olympic v Port Kembla @ Innovation Campus – 2.00pm

Wollongong Olympic look like they are too far to challenge for the league title however they are in the State Cup Final where they will play another local team in Albion Park. They are sitting in fourth however Port Kembla is only two points behind.

Port Kembla have played an extra game however they know a loss here would make things very difficult if they are to break into the playoffs. Port Kembla will be buoyed by the fact they have beaten Olympic 3-0 earlier this year although once suspects that Olympic may just edge out Port this time around.
