Big V Round 3 Wrap

It's been another huge weekend of Big V basketball, with both our State Youth Championship teams having to front up for tough double headers. Here's the wrap for all teams ...

State Youth Championship Men

Its been a tough opening for the boys, having to front up for two double headers in the first three rounds. And it didn't get any better this weekend ... the Boomers were smashed by Diamond Valley on Saturday by 57 points, with nothing going right and the shooting pretty average. To the boys credit, they backed up on Sunday against the Waverley Falcons and fought hard, but still went down by 25 points.

James Cappellari has been huge on the boards for the Boomers, and guards Maartens, Larman-Ripon and Ross have been busy, but the boys have been struggling to hold the opposition to a low score.

That's a 0 - 5 start to the season and the team has plenty of work to do, especially on D - but as a new group there should be improvement ahead over the upcoming rounds.

State Championship Men

Our senior men have also endured a tough start to the season, also going down to Diamond Valley to start the season with 3 losses.

The big guns are firing, with Latham, Standerfer and Best leading the scorers against the Eagles, but the Boomers need to find more support from the rest of the bench. No doubt head coach KB will be working on the team game as the boys seek to break their duck.

The Boomers have certainly shown in places that they can be competitive and match it with most teams in patches, but it's the four quarter sustained effort that will make the difference. As with the Youth Men, this is a new group together so will certainly improve over the season.

State Youth Championship Women

The shining light so far for the Boomers has been our State Youth girls, who have opened the season with three on the trot. After a shaky first game against Geelong, the girls were up against the highly fancied Diamond Valley girls at TLC on Saturday night. Our girls produced a "book end" game with outstanding first and last quarters to blow the Eagles off the court by 39 points ... Ellie Locke and Tessa Ramsay led the scoresheet with outstanding games, and Bridie Malone was tough on the boards.

On Sunday the girls had to back up against a young Waverley Falcons outfit. The Boomer started favourites but the Falcons took it up to the girls, leading narrowly for most of the game and deep into the last quarter. With the girls down by 4 with only a couple of minutes of game time left, Kayle Theodore and Shelby Walton stepped up to hit 3 massive treys to sink a dagger into Waverley and grab a tough win by a narrow 5 points. The girls were out on their feet at the end of the game, so this was a massive away win to grab early in the season against a team that will improve.

State Championship Women

And last but not least, our senior girls notched their first win last week but probably went in as slight underdogs against a Diamond Valley team with plenty of shooting power. The girls played hard to grab a solid 12 point lead at half time, but a woeful 1 from 18 for the third term let the Eagles right back into the game.

The last quarter was basket for basket with the girls down by a single point with 10 seconds on the clock. Coach Carey Papps in his last game for the Boomers called the time out to draw up the last play - what ever it was it didn't seem to happen, with Em Simons launching a fairly desperate three with the clock winding down. The ball didn't quite hit the rim (Em will claim a pass !) bit Lauren Pearce was there to grab the ball and flick it over her head in the last second of the game to grab an amazing 61 - 60 win.

So the girls sit at 2 - 1 and with still a player or two to return should be competitive over the season. Dee Butler steps up to Head Coach so we look forward to Dee working with the girls over the rest of the season.

A special thanks to Carey Papps for his contribution to our Big V program over the last couple of seasons.
