Youth League Women win Pre season Tournament

We ventured down to MSAC for the Big V pre season tournament on the weekend 7th, 8th and 9th March. I had 10 players from the youth league team and 1 from the Championship side playing, it was the first time that these girls had played together as a team. On Saturday morning we played Bulleen and after a nervous start we clicked together as a team and beat them by 20 or so points, so we were off to a great start. We then played Whittlesea in the afternoon and we started the game off great and got out by 16 points and then we fell in a bit of a hole and to Whittlesea's credit they came back and they won the game by 6 points. So not a bad day 1 of the tournament but we would have to lift our intensity for Sundays games.

Sunday morning we played Hawthorn and had a really good game and an excellent third quarter. The girls played great team basketball and we won that game comfortably too. Sunday afternoon was against Hume who play very physical tough basketball and we were going to have to be at our best to beat them. If we won this game we were going to move onto the Semi finals, so it was a big game. The girls came out firing from the start and we played tough intense basketball and beat Hume comfortably in the end.

The Semi final was played Sunday night and it was against cross town rivals Diamond Valley. Another great team game by the girls and we won moving us onto the Grand Final on Monday morning against Melbourne Tigers.

The grand Final was a scrappy game and by know means our best game of the weekend (because the girls were very tired) but we lead all game and out scored them every quarter and won the game by 15 points.

The weekend was an outstanding effort by all the girls and we showed glimpses of the type of basketball we will be capable of  during the season. Our running game, height and physical presence were our strengths in every game over the weekend. The new members of our team were very good and the girls from last year stood up and were solid contributors over the weekend. I would like to make special mention to our three juniors girls who were excellent and did not look out of place at all.

Well done girls and bring on the season.
