Junior Braves Under 12 teams perform well at Basketball Victoria Country Champs

BASKETBALL VICTORIA COUNTRY UNDER 12 CHAMPIONSHIPS from the Bendigo Stadium

Media Report from Craig Green

Executive Manager of Sport and Competitions – Bendigo Stadium

In excess of 3,000 players, coaches, referees, volunteers and all their families came and have now gone from the City of Bendigo. It was an action packed 3 days at the Bendigo Stadium, Flora Hill Stadium and Maiden Gully Primary School stadium for everyone attending the Under 12 Basketball Victoria Country Championships.

All teams commended the Bendigo Basketball Association, Bendigo Stadium and Basketball Victoria Country on an exceptionally well run event.

The Bendigo Junior Braves teams were in the thick of Division 1 finals action on the last day with the boys making it through to the final against a Bellarine team unbeaten for the past 6 months in all competitions. The Braves started well and scored the first 2 baskets for the game before Bellarine responded. Half way through the first half Bellarine lead Braves 14-10 and then scored the next 9 points to lead 23-10 before the Braves scored again. At half-time it was 30-14 the way of Bellarine with the Braves best for the tournament Jacob Nihill off with a knock to the knee.

The Braves responded to coach Nathan Williams in the second half to reduce the scoring of the opposition but had trouble scoring themselves to be still trailing 18-36 with 14 minutes to go. The Braves team started a resurgence but it was just too late and went down 38-44 to a Bellarine team that won all their 11 games, while the previously undefeated Braves lost their only game in the grand final match.

Final Scores – Bendigo Braves 38 v Bellarine 44. Leading scorers for Bendigo were Jacob Nihill 14, Oscar Keogh 9, Liam O’Brien 4. Leading Scorers for Bellarine Kai Kennan 10, Alexander White 8, Jet Kneebone 5.

Earlier in the day the Bendigo Braves Girls’ team made it through to the Division 1 quarter finals before finding the Geelong Supercats team a little tough down the stretch. The Braves girls had the lead for most of the game but when player of the tournament for Bendigo and team ball carrier Caitlin Richardson (55 points for the event) was fouled off Geelong then took the ascendency to run out winners 38-28.

Other girls to perform well in what was an even team effort throughout the event for the Nick Salm coached team were Jorja Hufer 30 points and Mackenzie Waugh 25 points who together with Caitlyn Richardson played a dominant role offensively for the team on the scoreboard.
