Western Australia’s Northern Thunder beat Victoria’s Western Metro by one goal in a nail biting Grand Final of the Under 15 Australian Lacrosse Championships in Adelaide on Saturday, 5 October.

The Team of 16 boys selected from the Wanneroo and Wembley Lacrosse Clubs was undefeated in the Championships, winning all games over the seven days against teams from South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia.

The score for the Grand Final was 7–6.

Northern Thunder Coach Sam Ramsay said he was very proud of the team and the skills each member displayed on the lacrosse field.

“We spent an intense 10 weeks in training before the Championships, increasing our fitness and practicing our skills and game plans,” he said.

“At the Championships we had some very tough games against other Teams, winning a couple of games – including the Grand Final – by just one goal.

“The level of competition was extremely high.”

Western Australia was also represented at the Championships by Southern Braves with boys selected from Bayswater, Phoenix, Subiaco and East Fremantle lacrosse clubs. Two WA girls’ teams also competed – Stars and Flames.

“Lacrosse is one of the fastest field games in the world and is similar in many ways to ice-hockey but on grass or astroturf,” said assistant coach Gareth Allen.

“It originated in America with the native American Indians and is now played in countries across the globe including Korea, Japan, Canada and Finland.”

Both Coaches play State League lacrosse – Sam plays for Wembley Lacrosse Club and Gareth plays for Wanneroo Lacrosse Club.
