In a letter dayed July 14, 2009, FISU Secretary General Eric Saintrond notified NMASA President Michael White and Secretary General Rose Igitol that NMASA, representing the Northern Mariana Islands, has been granted full membership status.

Saintrond said, "Following the recommendations of the FISU Executive Committee, we are very pleased to inform you that on June 28-29, 2009 the FISU General Assembly accepted your request and granted your association with the status as a new active member association of FISU."

FISU now consists of 153 active member countries, organized into five continental associations.  The CNMI is a member of the Oceania University Sports Association, which is the continental association for the Pacific.

FISU runs a multi-sport World University Games every two years.  The World University Games are similar in size and scope to the Olympic Games.  Anyone who is a student at a university (like Northern Marianas College) or other tertiary institution, or who will be or has been a recent stident, and is between the age of 17 and 27, is eligible to complete in the Games.

Since the Northern Marianas has so far not been successful in obtaining recognition from the International Olympic Committee, membership in FISU is seen as an important avenue for our young athletes to compete on the world stage.

Comment Guidelines: The SportsTG Network is made up of players, families and passionate sports followers like you who have a strong opinion about sport. That's great - we want you to have your say and share your thoughts with the world. However, we have a few rules that you must follow to keep it fun for all. Please don't be rude, abusive, swear or vilify others. Apart from some pretty serious sport sanctions, we also can ban you and report you if things get out of hand. So play fair and have fun, and thanks for your contribution.
