Tonga NOC mourns the loss of its Patron, His Majesty King George Tupou V

During an audience in 2007, he encouraged Lord Tupou, President of Tonga NOC/PGA to try and bring the Pacific Games to Tonga. That led to the support of His Majesty’s Government in 2009 which allowed Tonga PGA to bid for the 2015 Pacific Games. Tonga narrowly lost to PNG in the final count of the votes.

However, Lord Tupou has been asking for His Majesty Government to support another attempt for the 2019 Pacific Games which will be decided in Wallis & Futuna later this year.

“His Majesty was an enlightened man who had a vision for Tonga. He leaves a great legacy for Tonga – a special form of Tongan Democracy and a “silent supporter” of sports particularly, rugby!” according to Secretary General of the NOC.

The NOC Office will be closed on Wednesday 28th March for the burial of His Majesty the late King George Tupou V.

On behalf of the President, Lord Tupou, members of the Board and staff and all sportsmen and sportswomen of Tonga, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude and appreciation for the messages of condolence and sympathy that have been received from all corner of the world from sporting colleagues as well as our friends in the wider community of sports.
