Rnd 15: Sabres Men win in landslide victory over Mavericks

By Jake Stoubos

Sturt Sabres 128 | Eastern Mavericks 64

Sturt Sabres had their most impressive win yet of the season, defeating the Eastern Mavericks 128-64 at home last Saturday night.

Sturt were fierce from the beginning and they were first to get on the scoreboard with a nice shot at the hands of their captain, Tim Klaosen. The Mavericks were missing numerous shots and fumbling with the ball early on allowing for several steals to be easily created by the opposition. A three point shot was made promptly followed up by an impressive offensive run by Isaac White at the 5 minute mark. Alongside the Sabres’ incredible offensive pressure and strong counter attack they took the first quarter 33-18.

Not much changed in the second quarter, as Sturt’s game was replicated almost identically. Their accuracy and ball movement was phenomenal and they had a 2-1 score ratio essentially at the end of the period compared to that of the Mavericks. This spelt bad new news for the opposition heading into half time.

Compared to the somewhat fast paced and back and forth nature of the first half, the second half was the complete opposite. There were a total of 22 fouls committed this quarter, 13 of which belonged to the Mavericks, resulting in the play being stopped continuously for free-throws. This was one of the most physical and reckless quarters to date. Despite the intervals, Sturt still retained their poise and focus while the Mavericks completely broke down. They were constantly fumbling and unable to keep control of the ball. The sabres lead by an incredible 49 points at the end of the third.

Sturt sustained their dominant nature in the fourth while the Mavericks continued to play catch-up as they did for the entirety of the game. The final score saw the Sabres victorious over the Mavs’ by 64 points.

Isaac White was top scorer on the night for both sides, accumulating 20 points while Tim Klaosen had a solid contribution with 5 assists and 6 rebounds.

In the end Sturt were simply too good on the night and move into 4th place, while the Eastern Mavericks will be disappointed with what was a punishing loss.
