Australia is often referred to as the ‘Lucky Country’. The opportunities for the Millennial generation are endless. Whether you want to play sport, become a doctor or run a business, anything can be achieved. However, some countries are not so lucky.

Just a short 8-hour flight from Melbourne, sits the Philippines. Known for beautiful beaches, stunning resorts and fantastic weather, the positives of the country are often promoted. What is not common knowledge, is that 21.6% of people live in poverty. It isn’t often something we want to think about, but the reality is, many kids in the Philippines will never be afforded the lifestyle that we are accustomed to. But a family from the Eltham North Jets wanted to make a difference.

Many within the DVBA may be aware of the Tyrell family. Jim, Kylie, Samuel and Matthew have all been involved in the basketball community for many years through the Eltham North Jets and Eagles representative program. With the help of their Church, St Francis in Montmorency, Kylie and Samuel flew to the Philippines and spent 10 days visiting various organizations that assist homeless and disadvantaged youth. They integrated with kids aged 6 weeks to 18 years old and it wasn’t long before a basketball was brought out, and Samuel was putting the kids through their paces.

The Eltham North Jets donated brand new towels and training uniforms that Kylie and Samuel delivered to the children, many of whom are orphans or from rescue centers. While they still have some growing to do to fit into their singlets, it is fantastic to see the smiles on their faces as they received something special. Damian Lewis and Simone Lewis were pivotal in organizing and collecting the gear to be donated and this fantastic act of generosity would not have been possible without them.

It is proof that our wonderful sport can cross boarders, unite people, give hope and provide opportunities that are outside of the norm.

The DVBA would like to congratulate Kylie, Samuel and the Eltham North Jets on the amazing act of selflessness, care and community responsibility. It makes us very proud to know that we have members of our association so willing to give back and take the game we love to those who are less fortunate.
