Inside the Nest with our Eagles Under 16 1 Boys

Welcome to “Inside the Nest”, our weekly segment where we spotlight one of our Junior Eagles teams. This week we go inside the nest of our under 16 1 Boys team with Coach Jack Fleming.

With our 2018 Junior Championship Eagles teams about to enter the 1st Grading Phase of the season, we thought it was a great time to see how the preparations are coming along for the season. This week we focus on our U16-1 Boys team under the coaching of Jack Fleming. When asked about how he was building team unity, Jack was confident his team would progress together nicely.

“We are improving as a unit with each practice, we're fortunate to have some kids who played together in u14s as well as some exciting new additions to the group. The boys are getting along well, and we are working at it every single week in order to become a tight group that can deal with adversity on the court. We expect to be a hard-nosed, physical team that will hang its hat down the defensive end of the floor.”

The team recently went for a weekend away to Taggerty where they had to conquer several challenges and build team spirit along the way.

“We did a hike in the Cathedral Ranges, got to know each other and developed our own set of standards and team identity. The boys thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and we believe the benefits will help us deal with the ups and downs of a long VJBL season and foster a 'we' before 'me' mentality.”

One of the strengths of this team is the depth Jack has at his disposal.

“I think we go deep all the way from player 1 through to 10, so the biggest improvements will come when everybody understands and masters their role on the team. We want this season to be a stepping stone for every player’s basketball development, and that process will help with team success simultaneously.”

And what does Jack find most rewarding about his role?

“Showing athletes how to develop hard working, unselfish habits that will serve them in their individual success, team success and also win with people beyond the basketball court.”

The MUVJBL Grading season begins this Friday with all U12 to U18 teams in action across Melbourne. This season we have 22 boys and 20 Girls teams on the floor. Go EAGLES!!
