Life Member - Robert 'Bob' Plummer

The Diamond Valley Basketball Association would like to announce Robert Plummer as a newly appointed Life Member of the Association.

In 1971 Bob started working on the project to get the Diamond Valley Sporting Complex built. Bob was also a driver of forming the Diamond Valley Basketball Club with other representatives in the area.  In those early years, our juniors started playing at the Coburg Stadium to prove to the council we had the numbers and participation that could fill the new 2 court stadium.

To get the DV facility built, Bob and other members regularly attended council meetings to put the pressure on, and lobby councillors to get them to follow through and build the new stadium. This was a large task and one that didn’t finish once they agreed to build it; he then was on the steering committee with other sports groups to ensure it was done properly.

Bob lead the board of management from 1971 to 1981 and the centre was opened in 1976.

Bob was a major part of the first Diamond Valley Junior Committee being President and was responsible setting up the first competitions here at Diamond Valley for nearly 8 years. During his time as president, along with his committee, they ran the Diamond Valley Easter Classic Basketball tournament which was one of the largest around at that stage. This tournament attracted teams from all over Melbourne, Country Victoria and interstate. During this time, Bob and his wife Noreen with the Davis family, opened and ran the Diamond Valley Canteen for the first 4 years of its operation.

Bob has a strong club background and was the founder of the Greenhills Basketball Club. The club quickly grew from one team to the largest club in the area and is currently still one of the largest domestic clubs within the DVBA. During his Presidency from 1974 – 1984 he was a driving force in getting the Greenhills Basketball Club Training Hall built for his club. Bob and his committee members joined by long standing Greenhills families, committed to not only time and resources but also invested their own money to get this facility built at the local Greenhills Primary School. Bob became a Life Member of Greenhills Basketball Club in 1981 with the club introducing a ‘Robert M Plummer Award’ for Outstanding Service to the club which is still awarded currently.

Outside of his own playing achievements as a great shooter including being famous at DV for his ‘Sky Hook’, he was also a long standing Coach at both Diamond Valley Eagles and Greenhills. This is where he coached/produced a number of State representatives, SEABL and NBL players, 4 of which were in that very first Greenhills team to start basketball. He was also heavily involved in the operation of the then Diamond Valley SEABL team in which both his sons were playing in. To add to all of this, Bob was appointed a Victorian State Team Selector during this period.

In 1994 Bob was honored with an Australia Day Award in recognition for what he has done for the Basketball Community.

We would like to thank Robert ‘Bob’ for all his contributions over the past 40+ years and congratulate him on becoming a Diamond Valley Basketball Association Life Member.
