Talk Around the Trap's - Vol 3
For our third edition of Talk around the Trap’s, we were able to speak with Lincoln Miles, the coach of the Under 14 Boys Marymede (1) team. Not only does he coach Saturdays but he has 3 sons in our Diamond Valley Eagles just showing how much the family is in love with this great game, basketball.
1. How has the team been going so far?
We are probably doing better than expected. We have won two lost two. This is our first season of under 14's. After coming up from a successful under 12's season we have noticed the change in the pace of the game and the size of the opposition.
2. What are you looking to achieve this season?
To make the top 4 would be very satisfying in our first season of u14s. The players work well as a team in offence though they need to focus on their defensive pressure around the ring. To play against the bigger players they need to use their bodies more and be more efficient boxing out. I also want each player to be more versatile playing other positions than what they are comfortable with.
3. What do you find most enjoyable about coaching?
I love having an influence in a sport that I see the boys love so much. I love to see how they handle the pressure of each game and utilise their training within the game I love the social side of coaching and sharing with other coaches my passion for the game.
4. What has been the best highlight so far with this team?
Winning the under 12's grand final last season was definitely a highlight. Winning a couple of close games this season showed me they are ready for u14s.
5. What do you find most challenging about being basketball coach?
Trying to continually evolve training and keeping the boys interested is always tough but I love the challenge. Tailoring coaching methods to suit the different skills levels and personalities of each player
6. How have the boys adjusted from under 12s to under 14s?
They love the challenge but struggle with the size of some of the monsters in the top age kids. They need to be more confident in their abilities when we play the better opposition.
