Looking Sharp in Green and Gold!

Looking Sharp in Green and Gold!

Following the trend of Diamond Valley Eagles being selected to represent our country and don the prestigious green and gold in recent years, a big congratulations goes to our very own Alex Sharp who, this week, was named in the Australian U17 Women’s team for the FIBA U17 World Championship for Women, held in Klatovy and Pilsen, Czech Republic from June 28 to July 6.

Currently honing her skills at Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence, at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra, Sharp will take some good form into the tournament – averaging 8.0 points, 4.25 rebounds and 2.0 assists in 20.5 minutes, in her past month of play in the South East Australian Basketball League (SEABL), all above her season-to-date averages for the season.

Diamond Valley Technical Director of Coaching, Alan McAughtry said, “This has been four years in the making – countless morning sessions, indies and Academy sessions. Alex has a willingness to be coached, a work ethic second to none, and has battled through the adversity of injuries and having been viewed for a long time as just athletically gifted – truth be known, it is the work and the time dedicated to her skill package, fundamentally, that has gotten her over the line. This has culminated recently in the opportunity as a development player with the Melbourne Boomers in the WNBL last season, currently with the Centre of Excellence and now to represent her country at a World Championships at just 16 years of age. Having worked closely with her, we at the club are very proud of her achievements to date and look forward to the many more to come.”

Alex’s professionalism and dedication to her training and continual development, over and above regular team sessions, has earned her great opportunities in recent years. The chance to represent one’s country is the ultimate honor – best of luck to Alex and the Aussies in the Czech Republic!
