LAUREN SCHERF FLIES HOME FOR SEABL

James, Wade and Bosh. Garnett, Allen and Pierce. These are some names spring to mind when the term ‘Big 3’ is mentioned. Now the Diamond Valley SEABL women have a ‘Big 3’ of their own.

Hot on the heels of the announcement of Ezi Magbegor and Abi Wehrung, it is with great pleasure that the DVBA welcome home Lauren Scherf to play for the Diamond Valley SEABL women in 2018. Lauren has had an incredibly decorated career for a 21-year-old and is on the top of a lot of SEABL recruiter’s lists.

Lauren’s basketball journey began with the Hurstbridge Hurricanes in what is now known as the Northern Junior Basketball League. Being a tall, strong, talented athlete, she was very quickly selected into the Eagle’s representative program and flourished as a basketballer. She made the U16, U18 and U20’s Victoria Metro State teams and was a regular at Australian Development Camps.

In 2012 the 6ft 5” big made her international debut representing Australia in the U17 FIBA Oceania Championships where she helped her team take home the Gold. In 2013 she again donned the green and gold for the U17 Sapphires team in the FIBA World Championships in Lithuania bringing home a Bronze medal. In 2014 she was selected in the U19 Australian Gems team that competed in the FIBA Oceania Championships that swept the floor with their competition and took home Gold. 2015 saw Lauren make the U19 Gems again and compete in the U19 FIBA World Championships in Russia. Australia on this occasion, defeated Spain to win Bronze. In the same year, Scherf debuted in the WNBL for the Dandenong Rangers and was awarded with the Rookie of the Year Award.

Earlier this year Lauren was a part of the Emerging Opals team, the Uniroos, who competed at the 2017 World University Games in Taipei, Taiwan with fellow Eagle Abigail Wehrung. The Emerging Opals took down tournament favorites, USA, and went on to win the Gold for Australia. The powerful centre is currently a member of the Canberra Capitals WNBL team, and last SEABL season she averaged an impressive 17.2 points per game at 45% shooting, 12.2 rebounds per game and 1.8 assists per game.

Although Lauren has played all over the world, and achieved so many wonderful accolades, she has always had a connection to the DVBA with her brother Mark playing for the St Mary’s Sharks in Civic league, coaching in the U12’s Eagles program and he is also one of our referees. So, no doubt, you will have seen her around supporting her little brother.

In 2018, she will return home and take the court for the Eagles.
“It’s been 8 years since I last stepped out onto a DV court and I’m excited to experience being an Eagle again with a new team to the SEABL competition. I’m looking forward to a new challenge with Zoe and a great team.” Scherf said.

Head Coach of the SEABL women Zoe Carr is over the moon with the signing.
“I am thrilled to have Lauren return home to play for Diamond Valley. She is an absolute game changer at both ends of the floor and still has unlimited potential. She brings experience, strength and a bucket load of ability.” Carr said. With culture being of great importance to the Coaching Staff, Carr added “The added bonus with her is she is a fantastic person to be around and is a lot of fun. You’re going to love her.”

The Eagles need your support. Come and see Lauren and the rest of the SEABL Eagles in April when the season kicks off.
