Senior Championship Weekly Wrap

It was a massive weekend for all our Senior Championship teams with road trips to SA & NSW for our SEABL teams as well as double headers at Diamond Valley and a tough trip to Keilor for our YL Men. Our SEABL women registered their first home win for the season whilst the YL women continued their stellar early season form.

VYCW

Eagles 80 def. Ballarat 40

The VYCW had a convincing 80 - 40 win over the Bulleen Boomers on Saturday night. Despite missing some bigger bodies, the girls started the game strongly, racing out to a 12-point quarter time lead, but Bulleen steadied in the second quarter, with the Eagles going into half time having only extended that lead by 2. Some great shooting and ball movement at the start of the third quarter saw the lead move above 20 points, and the girls never looked back.

The Eagles were led at the offensive end of the floor by Nicola Stewart (18pts, 7 reb) and Mikayla Peterson (14pts, 12 reb), and in only her third game of senior basketball Courtney Willemse was also a strong contributor off the bench finishing with 17 points.

VYCM

Eagles 70 def. by Bulleen 90

After an aggressive start to the game mental errors cost the group. A passive start to the second half allowed Bulleen to establish a lead that we could not recover from. Ben Barlow (18 points) and Matthew Baggio (17 points) led the scoring for the team.

Eagles 80 def. by Keilor 103

After a lack luster game the night before, the team came out and played some great basketball against a much taller and experienced group. After a very tightly contested start to the last quarter, Keilor’s height and experience allowed them to overrun us. It was very pleasing to see contributions from our whole group and especially our u/18’s players Andrew Giddens, Nathan Poelsma, Erik Kafritsas and first gamer Nathan Arcangel.

SEABL Women

Eagles 67 def. by Sydney Uni 77

The SEABL Women came close to winning on the road in Sydney on Friday night. With only 2 points separating the teams at ¾ time, the Sparks finished the better in the last quarter to win by 10 points. With Ezi Magbegor and Chevannah Paalvast returning from Commonwealth Games duties, they provided a real lift in intensity for the team and more scoring potency as they both contributed 10 and 14 points respectively and had support from Abi Wehrung with 12 points.

Eagles 79 def. Dandenong 77

The women returned to the winners list on Sunday afternoon winning a thriller at home by 2 points!! After being down by 7 at the ¼ time, the Eagles produced a stunning 2nd quarter to lead by 10 at half time. It was a pulsating second half and it was left to the heroics of Maddison Rocci who put the Eagles ahead in the dying moments only to then grab a game saving rebound with just seconds left. Paalvast was sensational bagging a game high 24 points and 6 steals for the team with Wehrung (17 points) and Magbegor (15 points) providing the support.

SEABL Men

Eagles 63 def. by Mt Gambier 95

There aren’t any tougher road trips in SEABL than heading to Mt Gambier to face the current Premiers and so it proved to be with the men trailing from start to finish as they went down to the Pioneers. 14 points from Dyson King-Hawea and Mike Best led the scorers whilst Daniel Camps with 7 assists and 13 points also found some form.

Eagles 74 def. by Dandenong 83

The Men will rue their slow start as they suffered a 9 point loss to the Rangers. After being down by 16 points at ¼ time, the team lifted their intensity and pressure to produce a stunning 2nd quarter which saw them score 27 points to 13 and only trail by 2 points at the half. The 3rd quarter was frenetic with both teams thrilling the big crowd with their high-quality play. All tied up the break, the Rangers just had too much firepower as they snuck home in the end. Joel Spear was brilliant with 27 points and 8 rebounds whilst Mike Best continued his good form collecting 11 rebounds and adding 22 points. Lukas Kafritsas was hot from outside the arc knocking down 4/6 3-point attempts.

Our SEABL teams are at home again this Saturday night with a double header from 6pm whilst our YL teams head to Dandenong on Sunday afternoon. Don’t miss any of the action by purchasing your 2018 Senior Membership, contact zoe@dvbasketbal.com.au
