DOMESTIC CLUB SPOTLIGHT

Every month we shine a spotlight on our Domestic Clubs to acknowledge the hard work and effort of those involved to make their club tick, and celebrate the history and future of these great clubs. This week, let us introduce the St Joseph's Jaguars Basketball Club.

1.       Tell us about your club?  Number of members? Where you are based?

St Joseph’s Jaguars was formed last year with this Autumn season being our first. We have 4 teams (2 under 8 boys teams, an under 8 girls team and and under 10 boys team). We are based out of St Joseph’s Primary school in Mernda and all our members attend this school. Our main objective in forming the club was to further build community within the school and we have achieved this in spades. The enthusiasm of the kids, parents and families has been overwhelming. Next season we are growing by two more teams to include an under 10 girls team and an under 12 boys team.

2.       What has been a highlight of the club?

The highlight for the club has been the improvement in all of our players and the support of the whole St Joseph’s community. We have been really pleased with the level of team play and comradery within the teams.

3.       Who is a team to watch this season?

It’s hard to pick a team to watch this season, but the improvement of our under 8 girl’s team from D grade to A/B grade has been sensational.

4.       Is there a volunteer that you would like to recognise?

Starting a club is a huge time commitment, so there are many volunteers to thank. If I had to single one out it would be our under 8 girls coach Sarah Alchin, who doesn’t have a daughter or a background in basketball, but didn’t want the girls to miss out so she volunteered to coach the girls and attends every training session and game.

5.       Are there any upcoming events or fundraisers for your club?

We are lucky to have the school community to help us with our fundraising efforts. We have a ‘club day’ at school in the next month and I hate to think how many zooper doopers and sausages we have sold in the last 6 months to raise funds and keep costs down for our families.

6.       Is there a sponsor you would like to recognise?

We have been lucky to gain  a number of sponsors over the course of the season, who hear our story and want to be apart of it. It wouldn’t be fair to single one out but we are very grateful to Barry Plant Doreen, Rokon constructions, Future Smiles Dental laboratory, Squeegee Taylor’s promotional clothing, Mary Kay cosmetics and Smartline home loan consultant Kaid Beattie.

7.       If people would like more information on your club, who should they contact and how?

If you want to know more about The St Joseph’s Jaguars please contact us on stjojaguars@gmail.com
