Time Out - Vol 2

Welcome to the second edition of ‘Time Out’, where we will get the chance to catch up with Diamond Valley Referees. We were able to speak with Chloe Robinson, who is one of our junior referees and is doing a great job especially in our younger age groups to help teach the rules of this great sport.

1.       Why did you want to become a referee?

I always wanted to become a referee for my first job as I knew it would be something I would enjoy and it would give me the ability to interact with people of a wide range of age groups. I also thought it would be a good way to keep my fitness up instead of getting a job that involves just sitting or standing.

2.       What do you want players, coaches and parents to know about referees

I would like the basketball community to understand referees are human, we are not perfect and we do make mistakes sometimes.

3.       As a referee what is your mindset during Under 8 Games? What other duties do you have during these games?

During Under 8 games it is important you are not only a referee but a coach also. So when their skills develop and they reach older age groups their knowledge of the rules and basketball itself is at an appropriate level. My mindset during these games is to make sure the children learn but more importantly have fun so they have a desire to continue to play basketball.

4.       Any feedback you can give to people out there looking to become a referee?

If anyone is looking to become a referee I would definitely encourage it because it provides a great learning experience and you get to meet amazing and knowledgeable people.

5.       What do you find most challenging about being a referee?

The thing I find most challenging is staying confident in myself and the calls that I make.

Great work Chloe! Stay tuned for the next episode of ‘Time Out’.
