Talk Around the Trap's - Vol 8

For this edition of Talk Around the Trap’s, we caught up with James Biddle who coaches the Under 10 Boys Apollo Rockets (4) team. James is an enthusiastic coach who not only gives up his time to help teach this young group of boys but also coaches another 2 teams for Apollo.

How has the team been going so far?

Really happy with the way the boys have developed throughout the season. Each player has improved out of sight and playing good team basketball. After being graded to a higher grade, the boys are being competitive and even snagging a few wins!

What are you looking to achieve this season?

My main goal for this team was to ensure that teamwork is at a satisfying level and that all of the boys have opportunities to get goals during the game. For many of the kids in this team, developing their ability to do a lay-up did also become a priority for myself as a coach.

What do you find most enjoyable about coaching?

Knowing that I’m making a difference to the kids’ knowledge, skill and motivation of the game is by far the best thing I can take out of coaching. Seeing all the boys excited to train and to learn new things is awesome, especially when they go out on game day to try implement what they’ve learnt into their game.

What has been the best highlight so far with this team?

Definitely the formation of team chemistry. All of the boys have been brought together from different age groups/ grades, which sometimes proves to be challenging. However, to the team’s credit, they have adapted into a close group, love playing alongside each other and often play good team orientated basketball. Also, being there to see a boy that is playing his first season score his first goal ever was a great highlight!

What do you find most challenging about being basketball coach?

There’s always someone that runs the wrong way down the court to try and score a goal for the opposition! However, in all seriousness, it is probably ensuring that each player is on the same wavelength with newly taught concepts and structures. Often some take a little longer, or need a little bit more reassurance in order to understand.

Keep up the great work James and good luck with all of your teams for the rest of the season
