SEABL DEVELOPMENT GROUP

In early November 2017, the Diamond Valley Basketball Association had just been accepted into the prestigious SEABL competition, largely recognised as the strongest competition in Australia outside of the NBL & WNBL. Wanting to continually build on our program and opportunities for our junior players, our CEO Ross Wignell presented both our coaches and players a blue print of a holistic view of transitioning from junior into elite senior basketball.

An invitation went out to our U/16 & U/18 boys and girls to participate in our inaugural SEABL Development Program with 12 girls and 26 boys registering to be involved. The program consisted of 11 sessions beginning November 26th 2017, and finishes up on September 16th, 2018. These sessions are conducted both on court and in a classroom environment where our development group had a chance to develop their skills under our Director of Coaching, Senior & Youth League coaching staff.

This also provided opportunities for some of our junior coaches to be involved develop their coaching skills along the way. Seen as a very important part of the transition phase from junior to senior basketball, we wanted to help our players develop skills and coping mechanisms for the future as the players move into what can be a very challenging environment.

Topics covered were the importance of nutrition & recovery with Rob Mason from our senior program who also consults with an AFL club, mental health programs such as Headspace ran a session for our coaches as well as our players. Presentations by the Greensborough ANZ bank on managing finances, learning the importance of saving and helpful tips for building for the future.

Informative presentations by our Head Coaches of both SEABL teams, Grant Wallace & Zoe Carr, Australian U/19 Women’s Head Coach and Assistant coach to our men’s team, Dee Butler gave our squad an insight to expectations, skills and commitment that was required at a senior level. Diamond Valley junior and USA college player Alexandra Sharp and a visiting US college coach also addressed the group on life in the USA system.

Having this program has really helped give our junior players and coaches an insight to the skills required both on and off the court to help with the pathway on offer within the DVBA. Coaches who have participated in the program are:

Grant Wallace

Dee Butler

Braden Cotter

Brendan Jackson

Rob Mason
