Eagles Abroad - Vol 3

Eagles Abroad gives us the chance to talk to our Eagles who are over in college.

In our third edition of ‘Eagles Abroad’ we got the opportunity to chat with Carly Turner who is going into her last year at Saint Mary’s College of California as she starts to think about where basketball will take her after college.

1.How did your team perform this season? How did you go this season?

My team did well! We made it to the championship game of the WCC tournament and unfortunately lost to Gonzaga, then played in the WNIT. I had a good year, but as a team everything was spread really evenly which made us even more successful

2. How are you going with managing your workload of both basketball and school? What does your weekly schedule look like in regard to the amount of time you put into basketball?

I am actually really enjoying my degree at the moment, studying a Business degree concentrating in International Marketing. As long as I manage my time correctly and prioritise the right things juggling it isn't so bad. I am generally on court, in the weights room or conditioning anywhere from 2-3 and a half hours a day, plus extra shooting sessions

3. What are the facilities like at your college? How do they compare to back home in Australia?

SMC is a super small school so the facilities are not as fancy as some of the bigger schools, but that's why I love it. It has an awesome atmosphere, great people and the stadium is still much bigger than what I'm used to in Aus.

4. What have you missed the most while you were at college?

I've missed my family the most. My little brother is not little anymore and has graduated high school and just grown up so much since I left so that's been hard.

5. What is the atmosphere like during games? The crowd? The stadiums?

The atmosphere is great, because our stadium is not huge it fills up quickly, especially for the boy’s games and it makes it really different to most other big stadiums.

6. Have you got any advice for young players who dream to go to college?

Going to college is the best thing I ever did, I would say work hard every chance you can and just enjoy the ride, you play better when you are enjoying it.

7.  What was the best game you were part of this season?

Beating BYU in the semi-finals of the WCC was a great game, we didn't pull away until the end and it was very exciting.

8. What plans have you got for the offseason? Are you coming home?

I am coming home for a month in the off season and then will head off to Japan and Taiwan for the World Uni Games.

9. What are your plans after you finish college?

College has flown so quickly that I can't believe I only

have one year left and have to start thinking about the future. I want to keep playing somewhere but I'm not sure where yet, I'm keeping my options open.

Great work Carly and we wish you the best of luck in your final year at Saint Mary’s.

Stay tuned to see who will be the next college athlete we will be talking to....
