Time Out - Vol 1
Welcome to the first edition of ‘Time Out’, where we will get the chance to catch up with Diamond Valley Referees. First up, we spoke with Nathan Sloan, who has just recently passed from our most recent referee school and who also plays at Diamond Valley in our Under 16’s program.
1. Why did you want to become a referee?
To start earning money while I’m doing something I love, basketball.
2. What do you want players, coaches and parents to know about referees
That as referees we do not always make all the right calls and losing your cool about it only makes it harder.
3. What is it like being on the other side? From being a player to now umpiring a game?
I notice a lot more things during a game as I’m seeing it from a different angle, which has also helped me as a basketball player. I have a lot more respect for referees now that I understand what they have to do.
4. Any feedback you can give to people out there looking to become a referee?
Just do it, not as hard as it seems. The supervisors that help during the training were always there to assist along the way, and if you are at basketball all day why not earn some money while you are there.
5. What do you find most challenging about being a referee?
The crowd and the coaches. Being terrified of making the wrong call for then parents and coaches to complain to you about.
