Welcome Back Michael Karaula

At the age of 13, Michael Karaula was lucky enough to be a part of a grand final in the Under 14s ‘A’ grade domestic competition at the Diamond Valley Basketball Association. He loved playing for the St Mary’s Sharks and also played for our very own Diamond Valley Eagles. During his Grand Final he was overwhelmed with fatigue which was definitely out of the ordinary for him. Assuming this was a once off, Michael continued to play for 4 weeks and suffered the same reaction. This was when he knew something just wasn’t right and headed to the doctor.

Michael’s world was shaken when he found out that his fatigue was not simply due to fitness. He was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of 13. As a result, basketball had to take a back seat while he focused on his health. Not knowing when he could return to the game he loves was difficult for him to handle, but he had a new focus.

After the devastating diagnosis, Michael always remained strong. “Straight away from being informed of the diagnosis he was always positive, he never needed someone steering him in the right direction.” Michael’s mum Vesna said.

Treatment began in 2014 which took a major toll on his body, often feeling lethargic which restricted his ability to get to games and support his team. With the love and support of his family, Michael faced the treatments head on and in the beginning of 2015, he was back to low impact exercise.

Being able to get moving again made Michael even more determined to get back on court. However walking on a treadmill and riding an exercise bike wasn’t scratching the competitive itch. He missed the fun and excitement of the game which lead him to coaching an U12 boys’ team for the St Mary’s Sharks. Coaching quickly became a passion for Michael and in his debut season, his team won the Grand Final.

After all of the hard work, the day finally arrived. Saturday 4th February, Michael put on his St Mary’s Sharks uniform for the first time in 3 years and was back on court. If that wasn’t enough, he was then asked to join the U18/3 boys’ team for the Eagles. Michael seized the opportunity and on April 21st, he took to the floor against Pakenham. “It is great to be part of the Eagles again, the commitment is great and training is hard which makes everyone work.” Michael said.

Michael is a great example of being mentally tough and staying positive throughout difficult circumstances and thankfully, he had his final treatment on Monday 1st May. On top of all of this, Michael competed in the 60km RACV Torquay ride and finished an amazing 5th, although he is too humble to admit.

When asked where he wants to go from here, Michael said “I want to be the best I can be on and off the court, I am happy with the amount of activities I am doing and I am just happy to be back on the court again.”

Thank you Michael for giving us an insight into the last few years and the challenges you have overcome. We are extremely proud of you and look forward to all the great opportunities that are ahead of you.
