DOMESTIC CLUB SPOTLIGHT - WATTLE GLEN

Every month we shine a spotlight on our Domestic Clubs to acknowledging the hard work and effort of those involved to make their club tick and celebrate the history and future of these great clubs. This week, let us introduce Wattle Glen Basketball Club.

1. Tell us about your club? The number of members? Where are you based?

Wattle Glen Breakers has a long history – we started in 1986. Parents at Wattle Glen Primary School, Dave & Liz Lacey, coached children in a school basketball tournament and the kids had so much fun they wanted to continue. The formed the club with children from Wattle Glen Primary School. The Club’s philosophy is to have fun, learn the skills of basketball and to have a go.

The Club at present has 70 players, many from Wattle Glen Primary School but now also from surrounding areas such as Eltham, Doreen, Mill Park, Panton Hill, Smiths Gulley and Rosanna.

Although we are a small club at the moment, we want to grow! Next season we are looking for players for our U12 & U18 girls teams, and for our U14 & U20 boys teams. If you are interested, please contact us!

2. What has been a highlight of the club?

Last year at our end of year celebration, we were lucky enough to have Liz Lacey join us to present trophies to players, and to speak about starting the Club 30 years ago. What makes this extra special is that Victoria, the President of the Club played her first ever game of basketball for Wattle Glen and Liz was her coach!

3. Who is a team to watch this season?

The team to watch this season is ours under ten girls team. Their improvement has been amazing, and it is so rewarding to see their hard work pay off. Teamwork is fantastic! The teams’ Coach is one of our U18s players.

In the next few weeks, players from the Eagles Senior Women’s Championship Team will be training with our U10 girls, so if your daughter is aged between 8 – 11 y.o, and is interested in playing basketball, contact us to find out more information. There may be some fantastic surprises planned for the training!

4. Is there a volunteer that you would like to recognise?

The Club is thankful and acknowledges all of our volunteers: Coaches, Team Managers, Committee members and of course the parents who take the children to training and games each week! Without them all, we wouldn't have a Club.

But the Club would like to recognise the Secretary, Jenny Clarke, and President, Victoria Dollimore for their continual efforts behind the scenes, but also for their passion and drive to grow the small Club. Thank you!

5. Are there any upcoming events or fundraisers for your club?

To raise funds to update our uniform next season, we are holding a sausage sizzle at Mitre 10, Diamond Creek on the 15th April 2017. Come down to say hello and buy a sausage or 3 to help support our small Club! For those that can’t make it on the day, we have a Go Fund Me page - gofundme.com/gvj3w2-new-basketball-uniforms .

6. Is there a sponsor you would like to recognise?

A big call out to ‘All Things Safety’ Wear in Briar Hill for the donations and support of our Club. They are a workwear and hardware store, specialising in work clothes, boots, safety products, embroidery, and hardware. Check out what they do for you – www.allthingssafetywear.com.au
