Talk Around the Trap's - Vol 7

For this edition of Talk Around the Trap’s, we caught up with Madie Lee who coaches the Under 16 Boys Hurstbridge Hurricanes (2) team. Not only is Madie a coach but she is also a referee and a basketball player. . This is why we believe she deserves to be acknowledged for her time and effort that she is giving back to her local basketball club.

1. How has the team been going so far?
It hasn't been an easy season by any measure but the boys are working hard. Most of the team is bottom age (having turned 14 this year) so playing B1 against some kids almost 2 years older than them has been a challenge. Our average loss margin is 5 points so we're not far off the mark!

2. What are you looking to achieve this season?
This season I want to see the boys improve. As a team we talked about what we wanted out of the season and they all said that they wanted to be better basketballers. Each training and game I try to focus on an element that as a team we can lock in on and improve. Whatever the win-loss ends up as is secondary.

3. What do you find most enjoyable about coaching?
Coaching is a lot of fun. Definitely seeing your team get better or finally understand a concept you've been conveying is really enjoyable to watch. More than anything getting to know each player on the team and watching them all support and play for each other is great!

4. What has been the best highlight so far with this team?
Probably the biggest highlight was a game a few weeks back where we played the top of the ladder. In the end we went down by 4 points but I've never seen them rebound better. I put so much emphasis on getting on the glass and boxing out at both ends of the floor, they were grabbing boards from kids almost half a foot taller than them. They had so much fun with the game and it was the most fun I've ever had coaching.

5. What do you find most challenging about being basketball coach?
Probably the thing I find most challenging is that I'm always tempted to overload them with information. I realise that while I'm fortunate to have kids that know a fair amount about that game, they often forget a lot of what I say. My dad later told me that when you speak to players at any point in a game you should only give them 3 pieces of information and whatever you want them to remember most should be the last thing you say. Oh and trying to change up training week to week! Thinking of new drills is a nightmare!

Keep up the great work Madie and good luck with your future coaching ambitions.
