Inside the Nest with our Eagles Under 12 Girls

Welcome to “Inside the Nest”, our weekly segment where we spotlight one of our Junior Eagles teams. This week we go inside the nest of our under 12-5 Girls team with Coach Kim McAughtry.

It was a night out that will inspire the girls for the rest of the season. It was a night out full of excitement and fun. It was a night that the girls and the families will remember for the rest of their lives. Members of the 12-5 girls headed off to the State Basketball Centre recently to be special guests at the Melbourne Boomers home game against Bendigo.

“Thursday nights is usually our training night and as we are in the grading phase my initial thought was should we train? However I realised watching an elite Women’s team close up and I mean close, from the floor on beanbags under the ring should only inspire greatness in the girls” explain Kim.

With the Melbourne Boomers having a terrific season and featuring star players such as Liz Cambage and Monique Conti, the girls were treated to a fantastic performance as the Boomers piled on 86 points to win by 46. Before the game started, the girls took part in the ‘High 5 Line’ as the Boomers players ran onto the court. They then sat in the Bean Bag zone at one end of the floor for the duration of the game. At 3 quarter time, it was time to join in with Dexter as the conga line snaked its way around the court as the crowd cheered them on. The night finished with the girls given the opportunity to get autographs and photos with their heroes from the Boomers at the end of the game.

“The girls cheered from the moment the Boomers took the court to the end. It was fantastic and a night that will stay with all the families for a long time” said Kim.

The team has been impressive in the Grading Phase 1 games winning 2 from 3 and looks set for a good season with the Grading Phase 2 games resuming on Friday 2nd February.
