Talk Around the Trap's - Vol 6

For our sixth edition of Talk Around the Trap’s, we were able to have a chat with Mark La Terra, the coach of the Under 12 Boys Eltham North (2) team. This is his second year as a coach at Eltham North and with his passion for the game he has a bright future ahead of him.

1. How has the team been going so far?
Overall the season has been a little up and down. We have struggled to be consistent throughout the season however as a team, we have improved from where we were at the start of the season which is always important. We are a game outside of finals so hopefully the team can finish strong in order to sneak into finals.

2. What are you looking to achieve this season?
Just to improve every kid in the team. As it is under 12’s, I’m very focused on teaching the kids how important the basics of the game are and how you need to be great at the fundamentals. While everyone loves to win, they are young kids who are looking to just improve and play with their mates so I always just look to develop the skills of the kids over the course of the season and keep that as my main focus for the season.

3. What do you find most enjoyable about coaching?
What I find most enjoyable about coaching is just being able to teach a group of kids something new about basketball. Every season you take a new group of kids and you start from scratch and try to teach them new things about the game in order to help them get better as a player which I find really rewarding.

4. What has been the best highlight so far with this team?
The highlight of the season would have had to be this past Saturday as the boys played the best game of the season so far and defeated the top team in the grade. The boys played really well as a team and I was really proud of them on how they just never gave up in what was a tight game and the odds were against us the entire match but we were able to pull off what was a really impressive win.

5. What do you find most challenging about being basketball coach?
When coaching, I find that the most challenging thing about it is making those important adjustments within a game in order to win a match. Those adjustments are so important on getting right as they can win or lose you a match base on your decision.

Great work Mark! Good luck with the team and your future coaching ambitions.
