The 21-year-old locksmith has emerged as the Cutters’ key man in the last month, inspiring them to a come-from-behind win against Port Douglas a fortnight ago that propelled them into Saturday's grand final.
But Marino, who returned to his junior club as a 17-year-old, said it has been about harnessing that speed to get the best result.
“It’s definitely one of my assets but all season I’ve been working with the coaches on steadying up a bit and getting that disposal right,” Marino, named in The Cairns Post team of the year on Monday night, said of his pace. “Hopefully you get that bounce right but it’s hard with everyone around you and everybody screaming at you.”
Along with teammate Luke Anning, Marino has taken on a certain responsibility this year and says they are feeling good about the looming date with Saints.
“Luke and I always talk about the BLR, which stands for back line represent,” he laughed.
“Between the two of us that’s our job and hopefully we go well on Saturday.
“The club’s just ecstatic to be back in a grand final.
“Souths has been renowned for choking a bit so it was good to beat Port and hopefully keep that going against Saints.”
Souths play Saints at 3pm at Cazalys on Saturday.
