This week the National AFL Competition is celebrating Indigenous Round. AFL Indigenous Round is of significant importance and value in the footy and wider community and is held during National Reconciliation Week.
Like the AFL, AFL Cairns will celebrate Indigenous Round. The Indigenous Round is an opportunity to celebrate the role these athletes have had in shaping Australian Rules football. Not just making the game spectacular, but bringing two cultures together! It is a chance to celebrate the contributions and sheer excellence of our country’s Indigenous players and Australia’s Indigenous heritage.
From a deep connection with the land comes a proud history of runners, jumpers, hunters, collectors, dancers, artists and leaders. These skills echo the incredible contribution that Indigenous footballers have made to the game.
The AFL encourage this round to be played with all of your talents and commitments, but do so in the tradition of reconciliation and recognition of the indigenous people and their contributions to our great game.
The AFL and AFL Cairns have adopted Racial Vilification Codes and have declared that there is no place for race discrimination in football. It is time for all of us to come together and declare that there is no place for this behaviour in out game, league and club.
Let’s celebrate the bringing on two cultures together!
