Macedon edged out the Sunbury Kangaroos by 35-points in round 15 football action at Tony Clarke Reserve.
The Kangaroos needed a victory to keep its hopes alive for a place in the finals while a win for Macedon would go a long way to securing a place in the top two.
The scoreboard wing and centre-half-forward regions of the ground were very heavy under-foot in a game played in overcast conditions.
The first term was a hard slog with neither side able to hit the scoreboard.
Shaun Harrison started strongly for the Cats in the midfield with assistance from Aaron Christiansen and Casey Summerfield.
Dave House was a strong stand-out for the Kangaroos with assistance from Mitch Kook across half-back and Jake Young.
Matt Welsh kicked the opening goal, and score of the game at the 16 minute mark of the term as the Roos pushed ahead to a six-point lead.
Matt Knox levelled the scores for Macedon in the shadows of quarter-time with an impressive running goal.
The second term took just four minutes for the first score to be kicked with Macedon's Darren Goodwin registering his team's second goal of the day in style.
Goodwin picked off the ball at half-forward, beating a number of opponents, kicking the goal of the day from 30 metres out.
Tragedy struck the game when Sunbury Kangaroos' young gun Josh Kanellos hitting the deck near the scoreboard and badly injuring his knee. Josh was marking a positive mark in the midfield prior to his unfortunate injury.
Christiansen kicked Macedon's third goal shortly after the stretcher break to open up a 13-point lead.
Welsh was awarded a free-kick from close range and kicked his second goal for the game as the Roos went into the half-time break seven points down.
Harrison disappeared into the change rooms during the term and did not return after injuring his hand for the Cats.
Sunbury showed desperation early in the third term thanks to Jamie Cuffe's dominance in the ruck.
Jack Mills showcased his skills with another goal for the Cats. Ryan Pretty replied minutes later for the Roos with a goal from close range at the seven minute mark, in what would be the last goal for the team for the day.
Macedon had a number of opportunities to extend its lead in the term with Al Collins kicking a goal to push the margin out to 17-points heading into three-quarter-time.
The final term belonged to the home team with running goals to Zach Smedley and Summerfield.
Darren Goodwin added his second goal of the game on the full-time siren as Macedon prevailed 8.6 (54) to 3.1 (19).
Jack Kernan was outstanding at half-back for the winners and Smedley was outstanding in the midfield.
Dan Gregory led by example for the Kangaroos who kept their heads held.
DIGGERS REST v WOODEND/HESKET
Brent Tuckey and Luke Smailes kicked three goals, and Jason Williams was outstanding as Diggers Rest kicked away in the final term. Five goals separated the two teams mid-way through the final term before the ladder leaders kicked away.
Jacques Garnaut and Jesse Sheppard switched from the backline to the forward line to kick two goals each for the Hawks.
BROADFORD v RUPERTSWOOD
Romain Grenville kicked four goals for Broadford that defeated Rupertswood by three-points in one of the games of the season.
The Sharks led by 16-points at the main break before the Roos kicked nine second-half goals to just sneak over the line. Jorden Braddy was strong in the ruck for the Sharks.
LANCEFIELD v WALLAN
The Tigers led the Pies by 26-points at the main break before pushing ahead to one-point win in a remarkable game. Ben Schraven was outstanding for the Pies with five goals. Myles Dorman kicked five goals for the winners.
RIDDELL v ROCKBANK
Brian Ruffell kicked eight goals, Ben Said kicked six goals and reigning Bowen Medal winner Paul Sahlberg kicked one goal on his return for Riddell in its 243-point win over Rockbank at home. The Bombers kicked 23 goals in the second-half.
ROMSEY v MELTON CENTRALS
Aaron Paterson and Matt Burkett kicked five goals each for the Redbacks in its 116-point win over Melton Centrals. Alex Sweet and Josh Bamford worked hard for the Centrals.
