Diggers Rest played host to Macedon in the biggest blockbuster of the 2016 Riddell District Football Netball League season.
Fans from across the competition and the Bendigo Football Netball League flocked to Diggers Rest Reserve to see the champion two top teams face off.
The game failed to live up to expectations. Diggers Rest recorded a 45 point win on a day that was perfect for football and a ground that was flat and hard.
Diggers Rest welcomed key forward Jason Williams into the team. Williams currently plays for Port Melbourne in the VFL and the club had a bye.
Macedon welcomed former junior and St Kilda utility Dan Markworth in for his first Senior game since a shoulder reconstruction suffered late last year.
It took less than 30 seconds for Markworth to get his first taste of RDFNL football in 2016 when he was hit hard, and left mildly dazed and confused in a great contest on centre wing.
Both teams couldn't buy a goal in the opening half of the first term. The home team kicked four points in the opening eight minutes.
The first goal of the game came from Diggers Rest's Luke Smailes on the boundary line to push the score to 1.5 (11) to 0.2 (2) 16 minutes into the first term.
Smailes added another on the back of a missed mark from Markworth and the Burras were away. A delibrate out of bound call and 50 metre penalty had Joey Piccolo kick the third goal of the game on the quarter-time siren as Diggers Rest opened up a handy 23 point lead.
