On Sunday 30th July, an Under 16.5 representative team from the AFL Goldfields region took on a representative side from AFL Cairns at Cazaly Stadium in Cairns, which will host an AFL match between Richmond and the Gold Coast Suns in a fortnight's time, and defeated them by 56 points, 16.11.107 to 8.3.51.
The side contained twelve players from the Red Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball League, six from the Bendigo Bank Maryborough & Castlemaine District Football Netball League and six from the Melton Toyota Riddell District Football Netball League which, whilst not geographically in the AFL Goldfields catchment area, is administered by the AFL Goldfields Regional Administration Centre
After a slow start, in which the locals kicked the opening three goals of the game, the AFL Goldfields boys quickly gelled, and from that point on were the dominant team on the ground. Maldon's Tommy Horne was particularly impressive with a four-goal, best on ground performance, with Sunbury Lion junior Dylan Tarczon and North Ballarat's Matthew Johnston both standouts.
