The Sunbury Kangaroos have stepped up their preparations for a tilt at the 2012 premiership with a hard fought 19 point win over Romsey at the Boardman Reserve on Saturday. Part two of the 2011 grand final replay was an enormous arm wrestle with neither side able to concede an inch. The home side broke away to a nine point quarter time lead and the Redbacks battled straight back to trail by just three points at alf time. Shane Bishop and Jacob Opie worked hard at the foot of the ruck contests to give Sunbury plenty of scoring opportunities. They were both able to get on the goal sheet as the Roos held firm at hte break. Brad Mitchell, Shannon Green and Mitch Farmer worked hard to get the Redbacks back in the contest. Sunbury's defense held firm in the third term to hold the Redbacks scoreless, the first time that this has happened in more than two seasons. The Roos held a 17 point lead at three quarter time as Jared Pretty stepped up his intensity while Jake Powell's trusty left foot caused havoc for the Romsey midfield. The last term was a gigantic struggle and neither side was able to break away. The home side held firm despite the efforts of youngsters Angus Storey and Jake Lever of Romsey. The Roos 19 point win moves them into second spot on the RDFL ladder.
Woodend/Hesket was in the box seat early when it took on Diggers Rest. The Hawks, led by former Diggers Rest coach Glenn Hopkins, led by 15 points at quarter time against the shell shocked Burras. Hawk teenagers Geordie Taylor, Ben Toman and Josh Crook worked hard to put them ahead. The stronger bodies of the Burra's held firm in the second term as Nathan Holloway, Stuart Clarke and John Ryan muscled their way to kick three goals to nil to take a four point lead into half time. In a tight contest, the Hawks remained close to their opponents at every challenge but failed to kick more than just a behind after quarter time as Diggers Rest pushed themselves to a 20 point win. Macedon secured their spot inside the top six with a powerhouse performance against Broadford. The Cats led by 45 points at quarter time before going on to win by 83 points. Five players kicked multiple goals whole Stuart O'Connor and Brendan Faria starred for the Cats. Brent Littlewood and Matt Whitty battled hard for the Roos.
Melton Central sent Wallan crashing out of the top six with a commanding 18 point victory. The win moves the Centrals into the top six as it led all day against the Pies. Jarrod Ormerod and Steve Bell tried hard for the losing team whole Scott Matthews and Shane Fredickson were two stars that led the way for the winners. After trailing by 24 points at quarter time, Kilmore kicked 7.2 to nothing to lead by 20 points at quarter time against Rockbank. The game tightened in the third term before the Blues kicked away to win by 31 points. Travis Hede kicked three goals and was one of five multiple goal scorers for the winning team while Trent Corbett kicked three goals for the Rams.
