VIC Metro coach Rohan Welsh says the loss of Calder Cannon Lachlan Plowman hurt the rep side.
Macedon- raised Plowman, 17, injured his elbow against Geelong Falcons in Round 7 of the TAC Cup and will subsequently sit out the AFL Under-18 National Championships.
Welsh said while it was a major loss for the reigning carnival premier, he said it wouldn’t be a draft hindrance for the stopper.
‘‘ He’s obviously the best keyposition defender in the TAC Cup. For him to go down was disappointing but it will give an opportunity to others,’’ he said. ‘‘I wouldn’t say it’s too bad. He’s shown early in the year he’s a quality player and he’s going to go very high in the draft.
‘‘I think the recruiters will understand.’’
Welsh echoed Calder region manager Ian Kyte’s comments a week prior. ‘‘ He might play the last couple of games with us, and however many finals we play.’’
Strathmore tall Liam McBean has impressed Welsh and will feature at the top end of the draft at season’s end. ‘‘He’s started to play really well across centre half-back over the last few weeks,’’ he said.
‘‘ He has really shown some competitiveness, strength and ability to run. He will be a real bonus for us and the Cannons in the second half of the year.’’
Jonathan O’Rourke’s clean disposal and decision making has turned heads at state level, while Darcy Bailey, Rory Atkins and Matthew Dick are the other Cannons to feature in the 40-man Vic Metro squad.
