BEST mates John Davis and Matthew Haines know how to tackle a challenge when they see one.
The Sunbury men decided 18 months ago that they would spend five days running from Melbourne to Albury.
Mr Davis said the run was inspired by their desire to raise money to support people with cystic fibrosis. The pair will leave Melbourne on May 21 and expect to arrive in Albury on May 25, having covered 325 kilometres. Each day, they will run 65 kilometres.
"Matt and I have been best mates since high school. Two of his cousins have cystic fibrosis, and I've become friends with them as well," Mr Davis said.
"A group of family and friends each year travel to Albury to go to the 65 Roses Ball [a charity event that supports cystic fibrosis victims] and we decided 18 months ago we wanted to do more than just attend the ball.
"That's when we decided we'd run from the Royal Children's Hospital to Albury and arrive in time for the ball."
Both men, 24, have been running up to 100 kilometres a week preparing for their challenge.
"We've always been runners but have done a lot of training over the past 18 months," Mr Davis said.
He said the pair had received a lot of support. They aim to raise $20,000 and have already raised about $19,000.
"We've got two support cars which will follow us and many people have said they will join us for parts of the run."
