Coffs Harbour Hoey Moey U12 Men’s

Last weekend saw the Under 12 men team travel to Newcastle and Maitland for the NSW State Championships. The team met their first metro opponents (North Bears) on Friday evening. The boys started with intensity and showed the opposition that this wasn’t going to be an easy game. The game was much faster than the boys were used to and this began to take a toll in the final quarter. Special mention to Matt Rice for his rebounding, LJ Martin for his fantastic defence and Lachie Mihai for his offensive plays. Final score 80-59

The boys met Hills Hornets in their second game (who eventually went on to win the championship). The boys were up against a big, strong dominant team but our boys never stopped trying and put their bodies on the line for the team. Blake Mathewson & Greg Engelhardt were gutsy in their performance. Final score 77-29.

The last pool game was against Illawarra Hawks. The boys all played extremely well in this game and led for the first three quarters. A lapse in concentration and a few quick fouls – let Illawarra take the lead and narrowly win. Angus Anderson & Max Haynes-Cook were great with the ball & Hamish Anderson was awesome in defence. Final Score 38-34.

Lachie Mihai 15, Angus Anderson 9, Matt Rice 4.

The playoff game saw the boys go out with nothing to lose and only pride on the line. Their opponents were Gosford, who have quite a number of big boys compared to our smaller guards. The boys led from the first tap, great ball carrying by Patrick Heywood and some very skilful plays between Ashley Schellenberger and Lachie Mihai saw the boys win this game and leave on a happy note (see photo) Final score 55-43.

The Suns U12 boys finished their season as the 7th best team for their age in NSW

Lachie Mihai finished 4th of the top 10 point scorers in the State Championship.

The U12 men had a brilliant start to the season and although we lost a few crucial games at the wrong time, the boys showed how much they have grown as players and a team. I would like to thank all the players for making my first year of coaching so rewarding and memorable. You are a team of little champions.

Mark Mihai.
