Sports Club Season Launch & Touch Presentation
The Touch season has now come to an end both in Juniors and seniors. It has been another great season for the Berkeley Vale Club with plenty of team achievements and firsts for our club.
Back in October 2013 we nominated a U/20 Girls team to participate in the Hornets Senior Regional Championships at Maitland. This team had plenty of 15, 16 & 17 year olds playing in the team so it was a very young team coached by Brooke Playford. The girls played some really good touch over the weekend and reached the final of the 20's girls division against a strong Newcastle team. Our girls came out on top 6 -1 with a very strong display of touch playing against a much older team.
November 2013 saw the our club nominate a team for the first time in the Vawdon Cup Competition (Sydney Championships) with an open women's team that participated in the women's open Div 1. This team was made up from the majority of the U/20 girls team which meant it was a very young side playing in an open women's division which was well coached by Brooke Playford and assisted by Amy Regal. The girls played some outstanding touch and at times had spectators and supporters on the edge of their seat especially in the semi final and Grand Final. In the end our Berkeley Vale girls became champions of the Women's Open Div 1 Vawdon Cup with a 8-7 win over the Penrith Panthers side.
December 2013 saw again our U/20 girls side participate in the NSW State Cup along with two mixed teams and our first over 45's mens team. The Mixed and Men's teams played well during the weekend and I am sure learnt heaps and are looking forward to next year with the Men's 45's employing their own physio, masseur and ice baths next year. It was like walking into a scene from the TV show MASH with all the casualties this year.
The 20 girls team again made the final the NSW state cup coming up against a very strong and experienced Many team. In the end it was Manly's experience with a much older team coming out winners 7-3. Hopefully our 20 girls team will be together for at least another 3 or 4 years and a State title is not to far away. Well done to Brooke Playford for the work she has done and achieved with this very young team.
On the Junior sides in December 2013 the club achieved the most Successful club for the 7th year in a row at the Central Coast Junior Touch championships and finished 2nd behind Manly in the overall Club Championships. We had 5 of our 10 teams in finals, 10 & 12 boys along with the 12, 16 & 18 girls teams all made the finals but where beaten on the day.
Next was the Peter Wilson Memorial Championships held at Nelson Bay on the first weekend of Feb 2014. We have been Club Champions for the past 6 years so the pressure was on for us to perform well as a club. We had four of our ten teams reach the finals with the 12 boys and 18 girls winning their respective age groups and the 10 boys & 12 girls finishing as runners up. Our 10 and 16 girls along with the 14 boys made the semi finals. At the end of the day our club just did enough to finish equal first with Peninsula as Club Champions. This is now 7 years in a row as the best Touch club in the Hornets region. A very proud achievement for our club.
Two weeks later the main tournament, the NSW Junior State Cup as this is what all teams have been training for. After the first day all teams finished strongly in the pools with some only loosing 1 game and some undefeated. Sunday is the main day when it becomes sudden death with 7 or our 10 teams making the final 16 or better. 10, 12 girls and 16 boys made the final round of 16 and the 10, 12 boys 16 & 18 girls made the quarter finals. Well done to all teams for such a great Touch season and I look forward to seeing you all back again next year to hopefully go one step better then you did this season.
To finish off the touch season the Berkeley Vale Rugby League & Sports Club launch is again being held which will incorporate the announcement of the Best & Fairest players in each of the junior age groups and also announcing who is the Junior (10, 12 & 14) and Senior (16, 18 & 20) Boys and Girls Rep player of the year.
