Seahorses certain to start season: Club President

The Seahorses were last week in danger of dropping out of the 2015 premiership due to lack of numbers at training and a last-minute withdrawal from the Tooheys Hoey Moey Nines when only a handful of starters showed up.

But attendance has improved markedly and three of the four key imports the club has signed have arrived in town.

Specialist front-rower Maurice Stokes has arrived from Yanco, back-rower Madison Smith has transferred from Moree Boars and (ex-Sawtell) player Jamie Watts has joined from Macquarie Scorpions in Newcastle.

Also on the way is an as yet unnamed utility player from the English Super League.

"Signing players from England seems to be the fashion in Group 2 and we have one coming from Warrington," Brown said.

"With Adam Slater as captain-coach, we are going to have to get used to that accent."

Former Group 2 Redbacks representative Sukhpal Malhi returns from Sawtell, while Jake Wilkinson will play after coming home from a short period in Dubbo.

Brown confirms there will be no reserve grade team, but the engagement of the services of arguably the greatest player-coach in local league history could be just the man to revitalise the club at junior level.

"Matt Donovan has agreed to become our Under-18 development officer," Brown revealed.

"He's also been contributing ideas to assist Adam and the main team.

"I've followed the game a very long time and I doubt any man has as much knowledge or has been a greater sporting ambassador than Matt.

"Having him on board means that whatever difficulties we face in the months ahead, we are going to survive as a rugby league club," Brown said.
