French international to coach Macksville Eagles

Eagles President, Bill Richardson issued the following media release announcing the appointment of a new Macksville Coach for the 2015 season.

The Macksville Sea Eagles are pleased to announce the signing of Aaron Wood as their First Grade Coach for the 2015 Tooheys New Group 2 Season.

Wood, the son of Brian Wood who coached the Eagles First Grade to the 1979 First Grade Major Premiership, is a forward who brings a wealth of experience to the Eagles.

Wood was signed by the St George team for their Under 20s, spending two seasons with the Dragons before moving on to the Parramatta Club.

Playing three years with the Eels Wood was part of a successful squad which won three successive Premierships before being signed as a full time player with the Eagles.

In 2007 Wood began playing in France for the Limoux Grizzlies, being part of the team which won the French Championship in 2008.

Wood then played with Avignon, again being part of the French Championship winning team before moving on to Toulouse Olympic, winning the Championships in 2014.

Having qualified as a French Representative Player this Year Wood was selected in the French National Squad and has only just completed his representative duties with the Squad.

Wood will arrive in Macksville when his duties with the Toulouse Olympique team have concluded, but with modern communication methods he will keep in close contact with Danny Doolan and Troy Grace who have agreed to steer the Eagles until the he arrives.

Dean Hillary, who was responsible for the successful Under 18s squad this Season has agreed to coach the 2015 Juniors, and with a combination of the players from this Season and the Bowraville Under 16s coming through this squad looks like being another strong combination for the Club.

How did you end up in rugby league?

Aaron WOOD: Thanks to my father who is a former player.  At six, I played soccer and he decided to let me try rugby league, and I immediately liked it. But as the games were both played at the same time, I could not continue to practice both. My father asked me to choose and I chose rugby league.

What was your background in the sport?

Aaron WOOD: In the youth teams, Rugby School, cadets, juniors, I played in the team of Penshurst in Sydney. Then I played for the under 20 years of St. George Dragons. At age 23, I played with the Parramatta Eels and I arrived in France. I did three years in Limoux and again three years Avignon.
