2018 FEMALE VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR AWARD ANNOUNCED
Rugby League Brisbane congratulates Nicole Meakins of Carina JRLFC who was announced 2018 Female Volunteer of the Year at the 5th Annual Women in League Dinner on Saturday night.
The Award prize includes a week's accommodation at Fordy Towers on Stradbroke Is, and family sandboarding from Straddie Adventure Tours.
Master of Ceremonies, former Jillaroo Jo Barrett presided over the evening's proceedings engaging with the audience and ensuring formalities flowed smoothly.
Keynote speaker, Melissa McMahon MP, spoke of her long-term affiliation with the game of rugby league, including as player, coach and international correspondent.
Guest speaker, Jillaroo, Steph Hancock revealed the extent to which rugby league is now embracing the inclusion of women, recalling when she first represented Australia, Jillaroos were required to fund their own travel, accommodation and competition fees. Steph, as a girl, was denied the opportunity to play rugby league from the age of nine years old, also acknowledged the increasing pathways for girls as a positive move forward.
A high standard of nominations were received from Clubs for Female Volunteer of the Year for the tireless efforts of women, not just in their dedication and involvement in club activities, but also for their advocacy, influence and drive in promoting the female game.
Paying tribute to the tireless efforts of volunteers, other nominations put forward by clubs were Dale Anderson (Albany Creek Crushers), Chantal Haua (Aspley), Pip Lee (Easts), Carolyn Skeen (Logan City Hawks), Karen Walker (Narangba), Lauree Smith (Norths), Sharon Hickey (Pine Central Holy Spirit), Erica Nowland (Redlands), Jasmine Martinez (Russell Island), and Tamara Rowlingson (West Arana Hills). All nominees received $100 food and beverage voucher compliments of the Caxton Hotel, Ambassador Line tickets at Broncos v Rabbitohs game compliments of the Brisbane Broncos and double pass cinema tickets compliments of New Farm Cinemas.
Charity Partner for the event was Play for a Cure Foundation supporting cancer research.
