Lord awarded 2016 Col Purcell scholarship

Mitch Jennings - Illawarra Mercury

The 2016 Col Purcell scholarship recipient Riley Lord is looking forward to managing study and football after becoming the second Thirroul player to be receive the honour on Tuesday.

In the first year a five-year combined Commerce-Law degree at UOW, Lord said the scholarship will help him remain in the game without his studies suffering.

“It’s a massive honour to be recognised as a rugby league player and someone who takes their university study very seriously,” Lord said.

Currently playing reserve grade for the Butchers, Lord is hoping to break into the top grade this season.

“At the moment my goal is just to play good footy and hopefully crack into first grade this year or next year.”

Lord’s grandfather Kevin Goldspink played for Canterbury in the 1960s, making the 1967 Kangaroo Tour.

Steelers board member Bob Millward brought him to Collies from Eastern Suburbs where he played two seasons before shifting to Thirroul as coach in 1978 and 1979.
