Corrimal Cougars Celebrate Community Engagement

The Corrimal Cougars Rugby League Club will celebrate a unique initiative involving local indigenous artists and school children, who have contributed to a spectacular new mural that will be unveiled at the Cougar’s home ground, Ziems Park on Monday 30 November..

In the planning for many months, the spectacular mural reflects the local area and the Cougars club, through the eyes of the local indigenous community. Local indigenous artist, Zachary Bennett-Brook, founder of Saltwater Dreamtime, directed the project and was assisted in mentoring students at Corrimal and Woonona High Schools who have contributed to the project by teachers Paul Zubovic (Woonona High School) and Joel Foster (Corrimal High School).

Corrimal Cougars President Dave Adams is excited to see this initiative reach its unveiling. “The concept has taken many months to get to this unveiling, but has been enthusiastically supported by the indigenous members of the community, in particular Zac and the students involved. The end result is something that we as a club can share with all those who visit Ziems Park, and that the local community can take pride in”, he said.

He also spoke about the Cougars efforts to engage with their local area. “The Corrimal Rugby League club has been in existence since 1912, and provided many local youth the opportunity to play at the highest levels of the game, and to represent their local community. This project is a great representation of the club’s link to the local indigenous community, who have provided some exceptionally talented players to the Cougars over many years” he added.

To celebrate and officially unveil this unique mural, local media are invited to the launch event on Monday 30 November, from 9.00am at Ziems Park. Attending to celebrate the launch of the mural will key members of the Illawarra Rugby League and NSW Country Rugby League, local state and federal members of parliament, and Dragons Community representatives.
